With low testosterone, just like with any other medical issue, comes a variety of side effects. You might ask yourself how much worse it can get than the side effects like reduces sex drive, irritability, brain fog and loss of muscle mass. Well, with low testosterone, you can also experience hair thinning or loss. With August being national hair loss awareness month, there is no better time to talk about this issue.

There are many reasons why you could be experiencing hair loss, your genes being the biggest culprit. The fact is, if you have a family member who struggles with thin hair or losing their hair, the more likely you are to experience it too. When it comes to low testosterone and hair loss, your genes only amplify the issue and make it even more likely to happen.

There are several forms of testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (or DHT) is one of the strongest forms at five times higher potency than normal testosterone. DHT is also what prevents hair growth. It is believed that when you have low testosterone levels, your levels of DHT increase to make up for the deficiency; this is where the problem regarding hair loss stems from. DHT, especially in high concentrations, causes the hair follicles to shrink and in some cases die, thus resulting in hair thinning and loss.

Treating your low testosterone can help to lower your levels of DHT; options for low testosterone treatment include testosterone optimization therapy. For more information check out my book, The Testosterone Optimization Therapy Bible. In the meantime, you can work on treating the thinning or loss of your hair. There are several options to treat hair loss. Hims is one company that offers several  treatment options. The most often used treatment is either a topical treatment that contains minoxidil to stop hair loss and promote growth, or the prescription medication Finasteride which treats male pattern baldness. Either way, you do not have to live with low testosterone and hair loss. Do your research, talk to a professional and find the treatment that works for you. In the end, it will make you feel better and more confident.
